Sudan's proportions disaster: over 1,000 dead in a landslide in the west of the country

More than 1,000 people died on Sunday in a landslide in western Sudan, according to a rebellious group that controls the area. The landslide completely destroyed a village in the Marra Mountains and left a single survivor.

The disaster took place on August 31, following the torrential rains, the Sudan release army (SLM), led by Abdelwahid Nour, according to The Guardian said.

“The initial information shows that all the inhabitants of the village, estimated at over one thousand people, died, except for a single survivor.”is shown in the SLM statement.

The movement, which controls the area located in the Darfur region, appealed to the UN and international humanitarian aid organizations to support the recovery of victims – men, women and children.

The village “He was now completely shaved from the face of the earth,” added the organization.

The bloody civil war in Sudan-already in the third year-has pushed the country in one of the most serious humanitarian crises, with hunger declared in some parts of Darfur. The battles intensified in Darfur, especially at El-Fasher, since the army took control of the capital, Khartoum, in March.

Runing from the war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary forces of RSF, the locals took refuge in the Marra Mountains, where food and drugs are insufficient.

The governor of Darfur, ally with the army, Minni Minnawi, described the landslide as “a humanitarian tragedy that exceeds the region's borders.”

“We call on international humanitarian organizations to intervene and provide support and assistance at this critical moment, because the tragedy is greater than what our people can bear alone“He said.

Much of Darfur – including the area where the landslide took place – remains largely inaccessible to international help organizations due to continuous struggles, which severely limits the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid.
