Belgium will recognize the state of Palestine at the General Assembly of the United Nations in September, the Belgian Foreign Minister, Maxime Prévot announced on Tuesday, notes AFP.
'Palestine will be recognized by Belgium during the UN session! And firm sanctions against the Israeli government will be taken, “the chief of Belgian diplomacy wrote.
At the end of July, President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will recognize the state of Palestine at the UN General Assembly, which will take place between September 9 and 23 in New York. Subsequently, over 12 Western governments urged other countries around the world to do the same.
“In view of the humanitarian tragedy that takes place in Palestine, especially in Gaza, and in the face of violence committed by Israel, violating international law (…), Belgium had to make firm decisions to increase the pressure on the Israeli government and the terrorists in Hamas,” he explained.
“Belgium will join the signatory countries of the New York statement, drawing the way to a solution with two states and recognizing them,” the minister explained.
For his part, Canada made known his intention in favor of a Palestine state. The United Kingdom has also announced that he will recognize him if Israel does not assume a number of commitments, including an armistice in the Gaza strip.
In total, three quarters of the UN Member States recognize the state of Palestine, proclaimed by Palestinian leadership in exile in the late 1980s (Agerpres)
