Cătălin Tolontan: “Russia is here”

The idea that “we will see ours and a little will leave us alone” has a great disadvantage: it is completely impractical. We can look at the Republic of Moldova. We are not Moldova, we are more advanced, you draw my attention. Yes, it's true. But why are we sure that the present of Romania is the future of the Republic of Moldova and it cannot happen vice versa: the present of Moldova is the future of Romania?

The situation in the Republic of Moldova, which hosts parliamentary elections on September 28, is important not only because here are our brothers, but also because they can be our precursors.

Generally, we consider itself to be understood that Romania is treating the Republic of Moldova in the future, without even discussing the alternative: if it will be the other way? If Russia, China and the other authoritarian people come out the plan to change a world order that did they actually accept? Putin and XI declared it publicly before the beginning of the Ukraine war: they want to change the world.

If they will fulfill their promise, even partially, the pressure we bear in Chisinau and Bucharest will resize. Nothing guarantees us that we Romanians will automatically be the future that Moldovans will live. Perhaps the insecurity of Moldova can be an indicator for the difficult perspective of Romania.

The border between a developed society and a less developed one, as the British historian Arnold J. Toynbee has long observed, will not go to a balance, but will tilt in favor of less developed society. This is not what we say when we say that “Zeenski and Ukraine” get tired “. They could not remain between the worlds: if you do not advance as a society, you go to the other side. Do others decide for Kiev's inhabitants when the Ukrainians will live?

The gravity of the old world

If Ukraine goes to the east, the gravitational effect will reach other border countries, Romania is not of the most solid EU states, in economic, emotional and institutional equations.

“Why don't we see ourselves and we care about Moldova or Ukraine,” this is a sophism. It is precisely that we need to “see ours”: the ingested and boring job, to respect the rules of a capitalist, democratic and free society. Maybe the small work “is the real tribute to a generation that paid the price of our incomplete transition: to finish it at last properly”, as Elena Calistru observes.

Toynbee: “Absolutely impractical”

As for the “non -recoration policy” with those beyond, according to the expression of the same renowned historical, it has an insurmountable defect: it sounds good, but it is “absolutely impractical”. How not to relate to something so related to you that is part of you?

Russia is here, in Romania and Moldova, because he has never left. When the Kremlin had temporarily lost its power, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the old world was present in our prejudices and social systems, in the fears of incomplete escape from communism.

And whenever we think about what the variant is, the memory of the Berlin Wall is essential: what society is that that makes a wall not to stop the outside to enter, but not to let those inside?

Let's oppose Putin and his lawyers here is not a moral option, but practical. We develop or relapse into different forms of non -liberty. It was to write “we progress or relapse”, but it is no longer allowed with “progress”, because, it is true, I also abused.
