The laws of performance sport are harsh. So in tennis. A ball that falls near the net can make the difference between tens of thousands of euros from prizes. No wonder some tennis players are under huge pressure. This was also the case of Jelena Ostapenko at the US Open.
The 28 -year -old Latvian player probably hoped more at this tour. Ostapenko reached the quarterfinals in 2023 and has the hard drive. However, Latvian, the number 22 head, was defeated without the right of appeal in the second round by the American Taylor Townsend, the world number 139, with a score of 5-7, 1-6.

What attracted attention after the match was Ostapenko's visible frustration. There followed a discussion at the net, but the reason was not clear. That until Latona told her story on Instagram.
“I told my opponent that she was very disrespectful, because she had a ball in the net at a very decisive moment. Her answer was that she should not apologize for it.” said Ostapenko, according to Sportnieuws.nl.
“There are tennis rules that most players respect and is the first time that something happens to me,” Latona continued. “The fact that she plays in her country does not mean that she can behave as she did,” she concluded. However, apologizing for a fillet ball is not a written rule, but rather an unwritten one in tennis.
What follows for Townsend
Townsend, a double sample specialist, qualified in the third round at the Grand Slam at home. There he will face Russian Mirra Andreeva, the number 5. series. From the end of July, Townsend is the world leader.
In January, he won for the first time the Australian Open, after in 2024 he already triumphed at Wimbledon in the same discipline. At the US Open he reached the final in 2022, a performance he repeated a year later at Roland Garros. Townsend is still active in the double competition.
