On August 15, at the military base in Alaska, a meeting of the presidents of the Russian Federation and the USA Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump was held.
Communication lasted about three hours, including a change in formats: tete-a-tete in the limousine of the American leader on the way to the main place of negotiations and in the narrow composition of “three by three”, TASS reports. From the Russian side, the presidential assistant Yuri Ushakov and the Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also took part in the meeting, with the American – Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump's Special Supervisor Stephen Witkoff.
In a press statement following negotiations, Putin said that the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict was the main topic of the past summit. The Russian leader also urged to turn the page in bilateral relations and return to cooperation and invited Trump to Moscow.
“In order for the Ukrainian settlement to be stable and long -term in nature, all the root causes of the crisis, which were talked repeatedly, should be taken into account, all the legal concern of Russia is provided, a fair balance in the field of security in Europe and the world as a whole was restored,” the President of the Russian Federation said. – I agree with President Trump, he talked about this today that, of course, the safety of Ukraine should be ensured. Of course, we are ready to work on it. I would like to hope that the understanding we achieved will allow us to get closer to that goal and will open the way to the world in Ukraine. We expect that in Kyiv and European capitals they will perceive all this in a constructive man and will not repair any obstacles, will not make attempts through provocations or backstage intrigues to disrupt the intended progress. ”
For his part, the US president announced the progress achieved in negotiations, but noted that not all parties managed to come to an agreement. According to him, in the achievement of agreements in Ukraine, “you will have to participate a little to European countries.”
