Germany has a coalition. What about support for Ukraine?


The coalition was created as a result of the February elections she won pro -Ukrainian Christian-democratic union. The pro -Russian radical right alternative for Germany (AfD) took second place.

Germany is An important ally of Ukraine. Unia and SPD presented their positions on Kiev in 144-page coalition agreement as follows:

  • Strong, democratic and sovereign Ukraine is important for geopolitical stability and Germany's security,
  • Germany will continue to provide Ukraine with financial, military and political support,
  • Germany and its partners will develop a strategy for achieving lasting peace, in which Ukraine will have a strong position. This strategy will include material and political security guarantees,
  • Germany will participate in the reconstruction of Ukraine and look for the possibility of economic use of frozen Russian state assets for the purpose of financial and military support of Ukraine,
  • Germany supports the perspective of Ukraine's accession to NATO, which was confirmed at the NATO summit in Washington,
  • Germany supports the establishment of a special tribunal to properly prosecute and punish the crimes of aggression against Ukraine.

During his campaign, the future chancellor Friedrich Merz promised support for Kiev, which was reflected in the coalition agreement. The contract also contains Plans to strengthen the German army. In March, the parliament has already approved a military assistance package for Ukraine in the amount of EUR 3 billion (PLN 12 billion) and a draft act increasing the Bundeswehr financing.

The coalition agreement requires approval by SPD members and high -ranking representatives of CDU/CSU. After acceptance, Merz is to be sworn in to the Chancellor by the parliament at the beginning of May.
