The bacterium is particularly dangerous because – as the American media point out – it can lead to death in a very short time, even in two days. The disease in infected people may manifest, among others diarrhea, chills and confusion, and even lead to necrotizing fascia inflammation – a serious infection, as a result of which the tissues around the wound begin to die and as a result of which amputation may be needed.
The record number of infections fell on 2024 – 82 infections and as many as 19 deaths were reported in the United States. According to specialists, the increase in infections is caused by the intensification of extreme weather phenomena, including Hurricanes that caused the influx of warm, salty water deep into the land.
