Podnosova has died in Moscow on Tuesday, July 22, due to a form of cancer, according to TASS and Kyiv Independent.

Irina Podnosova had been appointed to the leadership of the highest judicial court in the Russian Federation in April 2024, by the decree of President Vladimir Putin. She was the only proposed candidate, and her nomination came shortly after the death of Viaceslav Lebedev, who had ruled the Supreme Court for over three decades, since 1991.

Podnosova graduated from the Law Faculty of the State University of Leningrad in 1975, in the same year as Vladimir Putin. In 2020 he became vice -president of the Supreme Court, being responsible for the economic disputes and the arbitration files, although the Russian press noted at that time that he had no direct experience in this area.

The Kommersant publication remarked at the time of his appointment that Podnosova was perceived as an influential person in the Russian judicial system, stating that “everyone understands who is behind her”, a vessel to the political support of the Kremlin.

The Supreme Court of Russia is the court of supreme appeal of the country. The 115 judges are nominated by the President of the Russian Federation and confirmed by the Federation Council, the House of Parliament.

Human rights organizations and independent experts claim that the Russian judicial system is strongly politically influenced, often used to suppress the opposition to the Putin regime.
