Skimming, or theft of money, among others From ATMs by illegally copying data from payment cards, it is still one of the methods used by thieves. At the same time, experts explain that thieves are increasingly using a new way, thanks to which they steal money from ATMs.

Jackpotting is a new method that is also used in Poland. The association with the game of gambling vending machines is right because the criminals “break the bank” in this way. As experts from Diebold Nixdorf explain, the explanation of which is cited by “Fakt”, Jackpotting refers to criminals that access ATM components and introduce unauthorized commands that cause the ATM to be emptied with cash.
In practice, this means that – as experts explain – “they destroy part of the console, and then disconnect the cable connecting electronics components with the ATM computer (ATM) and connect their so -called black box, i.e. their own computer. Then send to the payment order to the payment of certain amounts to the machine.”

As a result, thieves are able to strip the ATM of all the money. Although formally the lack of cash is the problem of ATM operators, it also translates, among others for money availability for banks clients.

It is worth remembering that for people who use ATMs, skimming is still extremely dangerous. Illegal copying of payment card data is possible by installing a special overlay on an ATM and downloading information from the card inserted into the ATM. A person downloading or paying cash may not be aware that his data has been copied, and as a result all funds may disappear.
