US President Donald Trump said on Friday morning that he was disappointed in the phone discussion with Vladimir Putin, because the latter does not intend to end the Russia's war against Ukraine.
The US attempts to end the Russia's war in Ukraine through diplomacy have largely stagnated, and Trump faced increasing calls – including from some Republicans – to increase the pressure on Putin to seriously negotiate, notes Reuters.
After talking a little on Thursday, Trump intends to talk to Ukraine President Volodimir Zelenski on Friday, he told the press on his return to Washington after a trip to Iowa.
“I am very disappointed with the conversation I had today with President Putin, because I do not think he is willing to negotiate, and I am very disappointed,” said Trump.
“I just say I don't think he intends to stop, and it's a sin,” added the American leader.
The two leaders did not discuss the recent interruption of some American weapons deliveries to Kiev during the conversation of almost an hour, according to a summary provided by Putin's counselor, Iuri Usakov.
A few hours after the conversation was completed, the Russians hit the Kiev Drone, the attack lasting practically all Thursday night to Friday.
“I did not make any progress with him,” Trump had said on Thursday about the discussion with Putin.
Zelenski told Denmark journalists, earlier on the same day, that he hopes to talk to Trump on Friday about the break in delivering weapons, revealed for the first time this week.
Talking to the press while leaving Washington for Iowa, Trump said that “I didn't completely stop” the flow of weapons, but he accused of his predecessor, Joe Biden, that he sent so many weapons that he risked weakening the US defense.
“We give them weapons, but we gave them so many weapons. But we give them weapons,” he said.
“And we work with them and try to help them, but we have not completely stopped the deliveries. You know, Biden emptied our whole country giving them weapons, and we have to make sure we have enough for ourselves,” Trump said.
