President of the Trade Union of Railway Sternists in Poland (ZZM) Leszek Miętek sent a letter to Prime Minister Donald Tusk with an appeal to intervene regarding the situation at PKP Cargo. Trade unionists call the premiere, among others, to restore the railway role in the transport of mass and heavy loads.


“I am asking the Lord (Prime Minister Donald Tusk – PAP) on behalf of the Trade Union of Railways in Poland with an appeal for immediate intervention on the circumstances at PKP Cargo SA in restructuring, which, according to official announcements, intends to carry out group exemptions, covering over a thousand operational employees, including drivers. Possible implementation of this decision will lead to the total loss of operational capacity by the transport by the transport Despite the perturbation – it remains a key element of the state's transport system and the pillar of national security ” – we read in a letter sent to the prime minister.
In the assessment of Miętka, the script covering, among others Group layoffs will have “extremely negative” effects on the Polish economy – “Especially for large infrastructure investments planned by your government, and most importantly – for the logistics abilities of the Polish army, in the situation of growing geopolitical tensions” – the head of ZZM pointed out in the letter.
In the letter, the authors emphasized that “for months” they alerted about the deepening degradation of the rail transport sector. “Unfortunately, appeals addressed to the infrastructure ministry, including Minister Piotr Malepszak, remained without reaction. The President of ZZM calls the prime minister for decisive action: restoring its key role in the transport of mass and heavy loads – also for the climate, national security, efficiency and workplaces” – they said.
In July 2024, the court opened the restructuring proceedings of PKP Cargo. Originally, PKP Cargo was to present a restructuring plan by the end of February 2024, but on February 27, the Company announced that the manager of the sanation mass of PKP Cargo submitted to the court an application for extension by 30 June 2025 the deadline to draw up the company's restructuring plan.
The company's management board in July last year He decided to carry out group layoffs by the company's plants and headquarters. The effect of this process was to reduce employment by 3665 employees. Currently, PKP Cargo employs approx. 10,000 people. At the beginning of June this year. PKP Cargo has once again announced that it intends to carry out group layoffs. This time the dismissals would be covered by up to 1041 employees in 2025 and until 1388 in 2026.
However, at the end of June, the management of PKP Cargo proposed to employees a waiver of some privileges resulting from the company collective labor agreement and replacing them with a motivational system based on work efficiency. The goal is to avoid group layoffs.
The PKP Cargo group offers logistics services, combining rail, car and sea transport. It is evidenced by independent freight transport in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Hungary, Lithuania and Slovenia. In July 2024, the court opened the restructuring proceedings of PKP Cargo.
