Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer (1632 – 1675) is especially known for the paintings in which he played scenes from everyday life, often placed in light domestic spaces. Of the little over thirty works of Vermeer who have survived to this day, six explores reading, writing and exchange of letters, popular topics in the artist's circle of painters.

Three of them are focused on the interaction between a woman and his maid and are gathered at The Frick Collection in New York for the first time in a single gallery.
