Venezuela conducts in terms of the number of refugees and people in need of international protection – according to the “Global Trends” report of the High UN Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). In the first half of 2024, the United States received 116,700 asylum applications from citizens of this country.

The document indicates that the decrease in the number of refugees from Afghanistan and the return of about 2 million Syrians after the overthrow of President Bashar El-Assad meant that in 2024 Venezuela became a country with the largest total number of refugees and people requiring international protection. These numbers amount to 370 200 refugees and 5.9 million people in need of protection, respectively, which is an increase of 2 percent. compared to the previous year.

Most Venezuelans seeking shelter remain in Latin America. Colombia adopted the most – 2.8 million.

UNHCR announced that Venezuelans constituted the second largest group in the world that submitted asylum applications in 2024 – they were recorded by 268 100. The US received 72,900 of them in the first half of 2024, which is the latest available data period. Most of these conclusions came from Latin America and the Caribbean.

Venezuela ranks third in terms of the number of people living in exile in the world, giving way only to Afghanistan and Syria, and ahead of Ukraine. The number of displaced Venezuelans increased from 5.4 million in 2023 to 6.1 million in 2024.

The government of President Nicolás Maduro rejected the report, calling him “manipulated data that confirms the total degradation of this UN agency attacking sovereign states, such as Venezuela.”

According to estimates, by the end of 2024, 123.2 million people around the world were forced to resettle because of persecution, conflicts, violations of human rights, social unrest and other forms of violence. This is an increase in over 7 million people compared to the end of 2023.
