In his first speech as president, Nicușor Dan spoke about a “deficit problem”. He claims that the future governing coalition must make fiscal reforms, which are “inevitable”.
“In the short term, Romania has a problem of the deficit. It is in the national interest that Romania has a government supported by a parliamentary majority. It is the national interest that this coalition will make the fiscal reforms that Romania needs. It is in the national interest that Romania will give stability messages”, is the message transmitted by Nicușor Dan to the Parliament Plenum.
The president appealed to the parliamentary parties to “act in the national interest”: “it will not be about the past, it is about the immediate future of Romania.”
At the exit of the plenary, he emphasized the importance of a government supported by a parliamentary majority, for “predictability”. We will tell the potential investors in Romania that there is stability and that the government will not change in six months. This is an emergency, ”he told journalists.
Asked about a possible PSD government, after the Social Democrats understood that they would like to stay in opposition, Nicușor Dan explained that “in the face of national interest, a party cannot say no.”
“Fiscal reforms are inevitable, it is mandatory for us to do them, and I believe that Romanians will put positive pressure for the parties to answer,” he said.
Nicușor Dan took over his term of president in a ceremony at the Parliament Palace on Monday. He took the investment oath and held a first speech as president in which he drew the main directions and priority for the coming years.
