Bank Sparkasse Hannover was to block the account of the former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder for some incoming payments. According to the newspaper “Bild”, the blockade concerns transfers that probably come from Schroeder's business relations with Russia.

Specifically, it is about payments from Nord Stream 2 – a subsidiary of the Russian gas group Gazprom – which is currently being refused.

For years, Schroeder has been the head of the supervisory board of Nord Stream 2 and according to “Bild” every six months receives about 200,000. euro for your work. These payments were previously transferred to his account in Hanover via Luxembourg. According to Bild, however, they did not affect from mid -2024.

In a letter to Schroeder, the bank expressed his fears that he could be affected by US sanctions if it continues to transfer funds to Schroeder's account – he said “Bild”, noting that Schroeder himself is not on any list of sanctions, and the US sanctions against Nord Stream 2 are in force from 2022.

In this context, the portal noticed that just a few weeks before the account lock in June 2024, the mayor of Hanover Belit Ony, the fierce critic of Schroeder, took the position of the head of the supervisory board of Sparkasse Hannover.

The head of the town hall wanted to take away from Schroeder honorary citizenship in 2022 due to the fact that the former chancellor “is not ready to draw personal conclusions from the war in Ukraine.” Schroeder overtook the city and renounced the title himself.

According to Bild, the former chancellor has not yet taken any legal steps against the bank. “However, because of his (Schroedera) great property, he will probably be able to do without money with Nord Stream for some time.”

The portal reminded that since the end of the chancellor in 2005 Schroeder has earned millions on work for Russian state -owned companies. In addition, there are fees for consultations, books from books and fees for speeches of up to 70 thousand. euro for one.
