The official residence of the President of Romania is, formally and officially, the Cotroceni Palace, which dominates a forested promontory in sector 6 of Bucharest, on Geniului Boulevard no. 1-3. Here is a tradition of royal and monastic living that extends over four centuries – the first settlement being the monastery founded in 1679 by the Șerban Cantacuzino voivode.
In the second half of the 19th century, King Carol I decided to turn Cotroceni Hill into a modern princely residence, and the French architect Paul Gottereau designed the plans into an eclectic style with Renaissance accents. His successors, Ferdinand and Maria, added the northern wing designed by Grigore Cerchez, giving the current harmony between the rigors of French academism and the neo-Romanian spirit.
At the Cotroceni Palace is the headquarters of the Presidential Administration and the place where the president carries out his daily activity, including official meetings, conferences and receptions of international delegations.
Although the Cotroceni Palace is also provided with apartments for living, not all presidents have chosen to live there permanently. Sometimes, for personal or security reasons, they preferred alternative residences.
