The Principality of Monaco, known for his luxurious lifestyle and bold architecture, now has a new spectacular neighborhood: Mareterra, built on six hectares of land recovered in the Mediterranean.

The Mareterra project, worth 2 billion euros, launched in December 2024, is Monaco's response to an old challenge: how to expand when there is no available land? The neighborhood was built on 18 huge concrete chessons, of 10,000 tons each, placed on the bottom of the sea, which works as dams for protection, writes the BBC.

So far, the neighborhood has two blocks of residential apartments (including one designed by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano), 10 villas and four Townhouse houses, a small leisure port, 14 commercial spaces and three hectares of public space. Luxury apartments and villas cost up to 200 million euros.

Land recovery is not a novelty in Monaco, one of the smallest and densely populated countries in the world. Over the centuries, the Principality has expanded the territory by 25%, including areas such as Larvotto or Fontvieille.

The project respects the commitment of the principality of climatic neutrality by 2050, being equipped with 9,000 square meters of solar panels, 200 charging stations for electric cars and over 800 planted trees, creating the greenest corner of Monaco.

The upper part of each chess, known as the Jarlan Chamber, is above the waterline to allow the water to enter and exit through thin vertical openings on the outside oriented side.

The design was designed to act as a protective dam that absorbs and disperse the energy of the waves.
