Political Crisis in Poland: President Nawrocki Calls Emergency Consultations After Constitutional Tribunal Dispute

Poland is facing a political crisis as President Nawrocki announced urgent consultations with parliamentary factions following his withdrawal from the Constitutional Tribunal. He described the events of the night as a “violent seizure of a constitutional body of the state” and urged the removal of police forces deployed by the government from the tribunal’s premises. These discussions aim to stabilize the current political landscape.
Nawrocki also pointed out that the Chief Justice would not recognize the actions of those who “usurped power” within the tribunal. In contrast, the government has characterized the events as a restoration of the rule of law within the institution. Tensions surrounding the tribunal have escalated due to disputes over judicial appointments, with the President refusing to accept the oaths of three of the six judges selected by parliament.
The tribunal’s head has barred the judges appointed by the parliamentary majority from taking office. On October 30, Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska announced the suspension of the tribunal’s head and his deputy from their duties, leading to heightened confrontations outside the tribunal building and accusations of a coup attempt.
