The United States has confirmed its commitment to provide Ukraine with security guarantees akin to those outlined in NATO’s Article 5. This clarification comes amid circulating reports that misinterpreted President Volodymyr Zelensky’s comments on the matter. Zelensky had stated, “We discussed various proposals: NATO, Article 5, guarantees similar to Article 5 – there are different security guarantees that exist on paper, in documents which Steve will convey to the Russians, and we will hear back from them in a day.” He emphasized that these are not promises equivalent to Article 5 itself. US officials reiterated that the guarantees must be robust, highlighting ongoing discussions about various security proposals, which will be communicated to the Russians through Witkoff, who is scheduled to be in St. Petersburg tomorrow.
