Criticism Grows for Lewandowski Ahead of Romania Match

Poland’s star striker, Robert Lewandowski, 38, has faced significant criticism following lackluster performances in recent Nations League matches, including a goalless draw against Bosnia and a 3-1 defeat to Sweden.
Reports from Poland indicate that the upcoming match against Romania is critical for the future of head coach Jan Urban, who took charge of the national team in the summer of 2025. A convincing victory is essential; otherwise, Urban may be replaced by Jerzy Brzeczek.
Concerns Over Lewandowski’s Form
Lewandowski’s position seems as precarious as Urban’s. He delivered a disappointing performance against Bosnia and was substituted into the game against Sweden for only a few minutes without making a positive impact. His role in the upcoming match against Romania remains uncertain.
There is growing discontent among Polish fans regarding Lewandowski’s performance, with calls for his removal from the national team intensifying. Legendary former player Grzegorz Lato, now 74, has expressed his views strongly.
Lato’s Call for Retirement
“Look at Messi. He was in excellent form, but at 38, he made a brave decision to retire from the Argentine national team. One must know when to step back,” said Lato.
Regarding Lewandowski, Lato stated, “He needs to realize that soon, people will remember him not for his goals, but for how he concluded his career.”
Another former international, Wojciech Kowalczyk, 54, also criticized Lewandowski during his commentary on WeszłoTV. “We have a burden in the squad. Yes, a burden who acts as a brake. His name is Robert Lewandowski. Unfortunately, you can’t play football with ten players today, but that’s what we are trying to do.”
