Poland is set to modify its military rules regarding the engagement of Russian drones and missiles. According to Deputy Minister Tomczyk, in the coming days, Polish forces will transition from mandatory visual identification of targets to a system of positive identification. Currently, pilots must approach an object to visually ascertain its nature before opening fire.
With the procedural change, pilots or operational commanders will only require radar data to make decisions regarding engagement. This is expected to enhance response times against incoming drones and missiles from Russia. Tomczyk emphasized that until now, such capabilities were typically reserved for wartime or military states. However, due to the ongoing threat and daily potential for drone incursions into Polish territory, these changes are necessary for the safety of both pilots and national security.
The decision for this procedural update was made by Major General Ireneusz Novak, the operational commander of the Polish Armed Forces.
