A 76-year-old man, Jim Copenhaver, who was shot during a 2024 campaign rally where Donald Trump was targeted in an assassination attempt, has died, according to a statement from the U.S. President on Thursday.
The cause of Copenhaver’s death was not specified in the statement from his family attorney, but Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday indicated on social media that he passed away due to complications related to his gunshot wounds.
“Jim Copenhaver, a true American patriot, has left us. A tremendous loss!” wrote Trump on his platform, Truth Social.
Copenhaver suffered injuries to his arm and abdomen and was among two individuals seriously hurt by a shooter positioned on a rooftop during the political rally held in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024.
Another victim, 50-year-old firefighter Corey Comperatore, lost his life in the attack, while Trump sustained an ear injury.
“Despite being injured while protecting his family, Jim displayed immense courage, continuing to FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT, and maintaining a positive outlook in the face of unimaginable challenges,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Thursday.
The Republican House account on social media also expressed condolences following Copenhaver’s death.
The assailant at the Butler rally, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot and killed by the President’s security detail.
