On Saturday, President Donald Trump announced new measures for coordinating artificial intelligence (AI) efforts, responding to warnings from researchers about the potential loss of human control over the technology.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated he would not allow the industry to be “decimated” or stifled in its development but would support its growth, according to reports from CNN and NBC News.
To that end, he plans to establish the “AI Task Force,” modeled after the Space Force.
“We will not hinder or suffocate the growth of this incredible industry in any way. On the contrary, we will value it, assist it, and oversee it as it develops! However, we will also be vigilant about what is harmful, and we can easily address this through our existing criminal and civil justice system,” wrote the President.
Trump emphasized that only individuals with high intelligence quotients would be eligible for the new position of “AI Czar,” though he has yet to appoint anyone to the role.
The President dismissed recent warnings as a “farce” and insisted that the U.S. must prioritize AI development to outpace China.
“Whoever wins in AI, wins everything,” Trump has reiterated multiple times over the past week.
While the White House has not yet provided further details about this initiative, a government official noted that AI safety will be on the agenda during Trump’s upcoming meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
Security Warnings
Meanwhile, members of Congress are once again discussing the regulation of the sector. Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “godfather of AI,” warned legislators in a closed-door meeting that time is running out, and they have “perhaps a year” to complete this task.
Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s Global Business Director, also cautioned that users and companies must prepare for “ongoing and persistent” cyberattacks facilitated by AI, as technological models gain increasingly advanced capabilities.
