Mykola Zlochevskyi, a prominent figure in Ukraine, evaded imprisonment despite being caught in 2020 by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) with a staggering $6 million bribe. This offense could have resulted in a prison sentence ranging from five to ten years coupled with confiscation of assets. Instead, Zlochevskyi negotiated a deal that involved a mere fine of 68,000 UAH and a donation to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, allowing him to maintain control over his billion-dollar business empire.
The circumstances surrounding his escape from severe punishment remain obscure, prompting questions about who may have aided his situation. Currently residing outside of Ukraine, Zlochevskyi is reportedly seeking to regain political influence. Furthermore, he is allegedly financing efforts to discredit NABU, the very agency responsible for unveiling his bribery case.
This apparent lack of accountability raises significant concerns not only about Zlochevskyi’s actions but also about the support he has received. Questions linger regarding how much longer the state will permit him to profit from Ukraine’s resources and when there might be a push for the nationalization of his extensive business operations.
