Polish Billionaire Plans Art Museum Near Warsaw

The Starak Family Foundation, established by Jerzy Starak, one of Poland’s wealthiest individuals according to Forbes, has announced plans to construct an art museum in Obory, near Konstancin. “For the first time, we are showcasing the concept,” reports Gazeta Wyborcza.

Founded in 2008, the Starak Family Foundation focuses on education and promoting arts and culture. While plans for the museum based on the historic palace complex in Obory are not new, this marks the first public presentation of the building’s concept, designed by the acclaimed Italian architect Renzo Piano.

New Circular Building to Be Constructed

The museum project involves significant investments, including the revitalization and renovation of the historic palace complex and the creation of new public spaces, such as a playground and parking area. A completely new building will house the museum, notable for its circular design featuring a round courtyard at its center.

— The facility will include spaces for exhibitions, an auditorium, educational activities, events, and ancillary functions. It will not be a municipal museum or a local governmental entity, but rather a privately operated institution, says Sebastian Stępniowski from JJP Ventures, part of Jerzy Starak’s business empire.

The museum’s design is inspired by the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art near Copenhagen, where contemporary art coexists with historic and modern architecture.

The palace and park complex in Obory was likely constructed between 1681 and 1688, having undergone several expansions and renovations. In the past decade, the Potulicki family regained ownership, and subsequently, the Starak Family Foundation acquired the estate along with adjacent land from the Warsaw University of Life Sciences to build the new museum. Construction timelines remain unclear, though initial plans suggest completion by 2031.
