Russian Agent Detained in Romania for Spying on NATO Bases and Ukrainian Aircraft

Romanian intelligence services have confirmed the arrest of a Russian agent who had been under surveillance since February 2026. The agent was involved in extensive investigations surrounding potential sabotage activities.
The suspect was reportedly engaged in photographing and video recording national communication centers and military bases utilized by NATO allies, as well as critical defense infrastructure and public safety facilities.
The intelligence agency noted that the suspect’s operational model is consistent with that of networks of saboteurs coordinated by Russian Federation structures across European states.
Additionally, the detained agent was instructed by a mediator to carry out photographic and video reconnaissance of strategically important military assets, specifically targeting Ukrainian Antonov cargo planes while on Romanian territory.
