Zondacrypto may have faced insolvency as early as late 2022, according to findings from the Estonian trustee cited by local outlets. Despite this, the cryptocurrency exchange continued to accept client deposits for the next three years and even became a major sponsor of the Polish Olympic Committee.
The Estonian court has declared bankruptcy for BB Trade Estonia, the operator of Zondacrypto, and appointed a trustee to oversee the proceedings. Reports indicate that the exchange’s assets were valued at approximately €167,000, while its liabilities exceeded €431 million, specifically €431,944,846.47.
The bankruptcy process was initiated by an Austrian model who held cryptocurrencies in her Zondacrypto account. The trustee pointed out that the exchange had likely been insolvent since late 2022, when it lost access to its cold wallet containing about 4,500 bitcoins (BTC). The Estonian trustee noted that the insolvency might have resulted from actions indicative of criminal conduct or serious management errors.
Zondacrypto’s €431 Million Shortfall
A critical turning point for Zondacrypto was the loss of access to its cold wallet in late 2022, marking the start of its persistent financial troubles. Despite these significant challenges, the platform continued to operate and accept user deposits.
During this period, Zondacrypto invested in its image and secured a sponsorship deal with the Polish Olympic Committee, which highlights the contrast between its financial deterioration and its marketing efforts. The trustee emphasized that factors beyond market conditions may have contributed to the insolvency, suggesting possible criminal activity or significant mismanagement.
