Poland is on the brink of signing contracts that will pave the way for the launch of its first electric vehicle. The government anticipates that construction of the factory will commence early next year.
The project, originally known as Izera, initiated under the previous government, is now in the past. However, the government remains committed to establishing a Polish electric vehicle.
After extensive analysis and multiple changes to the concept, Electromobility Poland (EMP) has found a partner in Foxconn, the Taiwanese giant known for its expertise in electromobility. Currently, the parties have only signed a preliminary agreement.
Significant developments are expected this year, as negotiations regarding the contract details continue. These agreements must also be notified to the European Commission.
Reports indicate that Foxconn’s CEO may be present during the contract signing in Poland.
Factory Construction Set for Early Next Year
Government sources say the goal is to start construction on the electric vehicle factory in Jaworzno, Silesia, as early as next year.
The EMP has been prioritized by the Ministry of State Assets, overseen by Wojciech Balczun, who has emphasized that this year is pivotal for the development of electromobility in Poland.
Details about the Polish electric vehicle are still emerging, with the project no longer referred to as Izera, although the new name has yet to be announced.
More than Just a Car Factory
Funding has been secured for the factory’s construction, as part of a larger production and development hub in Jaworzno.
This hub will receive 4.5 billion PLN from the National Recovery Plan, supplemented by additional capitalization from the Reprivatization Fund late last year.
The government holds high expectations for Foxconn as a strategic partner, believing it will not only facilitate the production of three electric vehicle models but also foster technology transfer to Poland. The planned hub around EMP is expected to stimulate the entire new mobility ecosystem, encompassing component suppliers and the battery sector, along with research and development facilities and local technology firms. Officials have indicated that local content is anticipated to constitute approximately 70% from the onset of production.
Foxconn is expected to play a significant role in the joint venture, indicating that its interests extend beyond merely selling technology. The collaboration model is designed to ensure that Foxconn benefits directly from the project’s success.
The focus is not only on building a factory, brand, or individual models but also on creating a comprehensive ecosystem essential for future growth. The aim is to ensure that between 50% and 70% of solutions for next-generation vehicles are developed locally.
The first vehicles are projected to roll off the production line in Jaworzno by 2029.
