Canada Responds to US Tariffs Amid Failed Trade Negotiations

Canada and the United States were unable to finalize a trade agreement, despite three additional days added to the negotiation schedule. The US has imposed a 50% tariff on Canadian goods worth $20 billion, prompting an immediate response from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, according to reports.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated in a late-night conference call with reporters that “Canada refused to finalize the trade agreement under the terms originally agreed upon earlier this week.” He further explained that the new requirements and the abandonment of prior commitments by Canada disrupted the fragile balance that had been achieved during intense negotiations.
Canada Promises a Dollar-for-Dollar Response
Following the failed negotiations, Prime Minister Carney vowed to retaliate against the tariffs imposed by the US, stating he would respond dollar for dollar.
Carney criticized the last-minute changes to the proposed US conditions, labeling them as unfair and economically unjustifiable, casting doubt on the reliability of any agreement. Tensions between the two nations have escalated once again after the last-minute collapse of the discussions.
The new tariffs were initially scheduled to take effect Wednesday at 12:01 AM. President Donald Trump extended the deadline by three days to facilitate further discussions; however, delegates failed to reach a consensus by the new deadline.
Impacted Exports
The implementation of these 50% tariffs will affect approximately 5% of Canada’s annual exports to the United States. The targeted goods include a variety of products from the lumber industry, ranging from hockey sticks to common medical swabs.
This tariff decision comes after trade in goods and services between the two countries totaled $880 billion last year.
