UEFA has imposed a substantial fine on U Cluj following fan misconduct during their match against Dinamo Kiev, which ended in a 0-0 draw and a 2-4 loss in the penalty shootout in the first qualifying round of the Europa League.
U Cluj has been ordered to pay a total of €59,000 in fines due to six separate infractions. UEFA has also mandated a partial closure of the stadium for an upcoming European home match. However, this penalty is suspended for a two-year probationary period, meaning it will only be enforced if similar incidents occur again.
Details of the €59,000 Fine Against U Cluj
In addition to the recent heartbreaking defeat at “Cluj Arena,” U Cluj has received significant punishment from UEFA.
The penalties stem from racist and discriminatory behavior, obstruction of access routes, and the use of pyrotechnics among the reasons for UEFA’s decision.
- €15,000 fine and a partial stadium closure (1,000 seats) for racist and/or discriminatory behavior by their supporters, with the closure suspended for a two-year probationary period.
- €8,000 for blocking access routes.
- €6,000 for throwing objects.
- €10,000 for displaying inappropriate messages during a sporting event and undermining UEFA.
- €8,000 for the use of lasers.
- €12,000 for using pyrotechnics.
U Cluj is now preparing for a double-header against the Norwegian team Brann in the second qualifying round of the Conference League. The first leg will take place on July 23 at Sepsi OSK’s stadium, while the return leg in Norway is scheduled for July 30.
If they progress, the Romanian side will face the winner of the tie between FC Dila Gori (Georgia) and Apollon Limassol (Cyprus).
