Donald Trump Critiques Thomas Tuchel’s Tactics After England’s World Cup Exit

On Friday, Donald Trump demonstrated his interest in soccer during a press event, joining the chorus of critics of Thomas Tuchel’s decision to withdraw England’s attacking strategy in their World Cup match against Argentina, which ended in a 1-2 defeat.
After England’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup final, Trump joined those questioning Tuchel’s tactics and also expressed doubts about Harry Kane’s role during the second half. Despite the backlash, Tuchel retains the support of the English Football Association and is expected to continue as head coach until Euro 2028.
England initially led the match with a goal from Anthony Gordon in the 55th minute but lost momentum. Tuchel’s shift to a five-man defense allowed Argentina to score twice in the last five minutes, securing their place in the final against Spain.
Trump Comments on Kane’s Position
During a FIFA reception at Trump Tower, Trump reminisced about a round of golf he played with Kane in West Palm Beach a year and a half ago, highlighting Kane’s skills. “You have a great player in England with whom I played golf. Harry is a fantastic player. I think they made a mistake turning him into a defensive player. What do I know about soccer? They had the lead and took their best player and put him in defense. We need to be a bit offensive, right? But no, I won’t say that. What do I know about coaching? It was unusual, but Harry is a great guy, really,” Trump stated.
