German Brigade Deployment to Lithuania Ahead of Schedule

Approximately 2,000 German military personnel and civilians are currently in Lithuania

According to Kaunas, the first phase of military base construction in Lithuania is ahead of schedule by 10 months, allowing for earlier troop deployment than initially planned. The Minister expressed optimism that the second phase will also proceed without delays.

This second phase, estimated to cost around €1.3 billion, includes building barracks, garages for military vehicles, repair workshops, warehouses, command buildings, dining facilities, fuel stations, training areas, and modern educational facilities equipped with simulation systems.

Spanning 190 hectares, this military complex is a key element in Lithuania’s preparations for the permanent stationing of a German brigade by the end of 2027. This move is part of NATO’s efforts to bolster its eastern flank in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Jan Stos, the German Deputy Minister of Defense, reported that nearly 2,000 German troops and civilian workers are currently stationed in Lithuania, with plans to increase that number to 5,000 next year. He affirmed Germany’s commitment to the permanent deployment of the brigade in Lithuania, noting that the infrastructure being developed meets high standards.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, present at the ceremony, assured that she will personally oversee the project’s implementation. She also invited German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to visit Lithuania.
