Miriam Bulgaru Eliminated in First Round of UniCredit Iași Open

Miriam Bulgaru, ranked 248th in the world, was eliminated in the opening round of the WTA 250 tournament at UniCredit Iași Open, falling to Elena Pridankina, who is ranked 201st, with a score of 5-7, 1-6.
This match marked Bulgaru’s second appearance in a WTA tournament this year, following her participation in the Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca, where she also exited in the first round. Facing Pridankina, who had successfully navigated through the qualifiers, Bulgaru aimed to seize the moment but ultimately fell short.
Played on the Central Court before a local audience, the match was characterized by a stifling heat, with high humidity and temperatures just below 30 degrees Celsius. Bulgaru started strongly, breaking early and holding a chance for a set lead at 5-4. However, the momentum shifted, and despite her effort, she lost the opening set 5-7 after 48 minutes.
Bulgaru Holds Early Advantage
Bulgaru showcased promising play, leading 4-3 at one point. Yet, she could not convert her service opportunity to close out the first set. As the match progressed, Pridankina’s steady play and aggressive returns, particularly on Bulgaru’s second serve, proved decisive in the second set.
The Russian player secured an early break in the second set, creating a gap that Bulgaru could not bridge. Pridankina’s efficiency, especially under pressure, allowed her to dominate the final stages of the match, concluding it with a 6-1 victory.
Pridankina’s performance highlighted her calm and tactical play, essential for her success against the local favorite. In her post-match interview, she emphasized, “Staying calm was key to my victory. I felt nervous at the start, but I managed to control my emotions and fought for every point.” Her first serve efficiency was notably higher, at 62%, compared to Bulgaru’s 47%.
Looking Ahead
Pridankina will face Oleksandra Oliynikova, ranked 52nd in the world, in the next round, having previously lost to her at Roland Garros in the first round. As she reflects on her match and the upcoming challenges, Pridankina remains focused, also sharing her support for her brother’s favorite team in the upcoming FIFA World Cup semifinal.
