John Bolton Pleads Guilty in Classified Information Case, Faces Up to 5 Years

John Bolton, the former National Security Advisor under Donald Trump and now a vocal critic of the president, pleaded guilty in federal court on Friday to mishandling classified information. His plea could result in a prison sentence of up to five years, according to Reuters.

During the hearing, Bolton expressed remorse, stating, “I’m sorry for this,” to District Judge Theodore D. Chuang.

Reports indicated that Bolton’s guilty plea was part of a deal with prosecutors, who stated that his sentence could range from no prison time to the maximum of five years, with the final decision resting with the judge.

As part of this agreement, Bolton committed to pay a fine of $2.25 million. He must pay half of this amount within five days of sentencing and the remainder within 90 days.

Additionally, Bolton agreed to complete up to 100 hours of community service and engage in discussions with officials from intelligence agencies and the Department of Justice.

He will also forfeit his government pension.

Sentencing Scheduled for October

Judge Chuang has set the sentencing date for October.

Bolton is accused of sharing sensitive information with two relatives for possible use in a memoir, including notes on intelligence briefings and meetings with high-ranking government officials and foreign leaders.

He had previously pleaded not guilty to 18 criminal charges last year.

In his published book, “The Room Where It Happened,” Bolton detailed his tenure as National Security Advisor, criticizing Trump’s suitability for the presidency; however, prosecutors confirmed on Friday that his materials did not contain classified information.

Authorities have reported that Bolton’s personal email was hacked by someone believed to have ties to Iran, a claim reiterated by prosecutors on Friday.
