At the conference of participants in the federal project “Clean Air”, which takes place on May 29 in Krasnoyarsk, Norilsk Nickel spoke about the results of environmental programs.
According to Sergei Tkachenko, vice-president and director of the Krasnoyarsk representative office of the company, since 2023, thanks to the Sulfur Program, it has been possible to capture 1 million 136 thousand tons of sulfur dioxide in the Norilsk industrial region. The sulfur program is the company’s flagship environmental initiative as part of the federal Clean Air project and one of the world’s largest environmental projects.
The efficiency of sulfur dioxide utilization at the company's Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant was previously confirmed by regulatory government authorities at the level of 99%. The total volume of pollutant emissions in the northern city, according to Tkachenko, has decreased by almost a quarter since 2023. Norilsk Nickel's total investments in the Sulfur Program exceeded 250 billion rubles.
“Preservation of the Arctic is not only an environmental, but also a critical economic and social necessity. We understand that working in such a unique and vulnerable region requires a special approach. The company carries out the most complex production tasks, trying to eliminate all possible risks to the environment and the quality of life of people. All our initiatives are built into the global environmental strategy, and we turn our commitments into real results,” emphasized Sergei Tkachenko.
He also recalled that to control the quality of the atmosphere in Norilsk, the company has created an environmental monitoring system of sixteen stations that transmit data around the clock to an open city portal.
In 2026, the effectiveness of Norilsk Nickel's environmental activities was confirmed by the results of the Polar Index rating of sustainable development of companies in the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. The metallurgical giant is recognized as the leader in the economic and environmental block of this study.
