Lukerya Komarnica

The Russian Orthodox Church celebrates on this day the memory of the righteous virgin Glyceria of Novgorod. The virgin began to be venerated in the mid-16th century, when her incorruptible body was found and miraculous healings began to occur near it.

Mosquitoes appear on Lukerya (Glykeria). People believed that these insects were brought by a warm wind in the spring, and a cold wind carried them to the southern seas in the fall. There were also special signs associated with mosquitoes. They said: “If there are a lot of mosquitoes on Lukerya, prepare baskets of berries; if there are a lot of midges, prepare baskets of mushrooms.” It was believed that if you kill a mosquito between this day and the summer solstice, a dozen of them will increase, and if you kill after this time, the mosquito tribe will decrease by a dozen.

In the southern regions, Lukerya was called Grechkoseyka, because at that time the first sowing of buckwheat was carried out. True, it was rarely productive for grain, but was sown “for color, for the bees, for the bird of God.” Another nickname for the saint is Lukoshnitsa. At this time, the men spent all their days from morning to evening in the fields, where women brought them lunch in baskets.
