Director Cristian Mungiu, in competition at the Cannes International Film Festival with the film “Fjord”, has already been rewarded with four prizes, informs News.ro. The jury's awards are to be announced in a ceremony which will start on Saturday evening at 9.15pm.

The distinctions received so far by Mungiu's film are: François Chalais Prize, Prix de la Citoyenneté (Citizenship Award), Ecumenical Jury Prize and FIPRESCI Prize (International Critics' Prize).

“We are happy to announce that the film FJORD received the François Chalais Award, a distinction with a long tradition in France. Tudor Reu, the producer of the film FJORD, and Tudor Vladimir Panduru, the cinematographer, were present at the ceremony to receive the award.”

On Friday evening, the film “Fjord”, which was greeted with a standing ovation at its world premiere, received the François Chalais Award. Created in 1996, this award pays tribute to the work of the reporter and filmmaker who covered almost 50 editions of the Festival. It is awarded every year on the eve of the announcement of the official competition record and rewards a film dedicated to the values of journalism.

Before the closing ceremony, the ecumenical jury of the Cannes Film Festival awarded its prize to the film “Fjord” on Saturday, at 3:30 p.m., in the Hall of Ambassadors in the Palace of Festivals.
This distinction rewards a deeply political and human cinematographic work, but also marked by a spiritual and cultural dimension, in the great tradition of a cinema that explores contemporary fractures without ever forgetting the complexity of the human being.

For the lucid perspective it offers on our society and for the values of solidarity, justice and humanism it embodies, “Fjord” also received the Prix de la Citoyenneté, a distinction that highlights cinematographic works that awaken consciences and question the world around us.

The film “Fjord” also won the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) Award, “for an intense and deeply moving story that invites the audience to reflect on the two sides of a legal battle and sheds light on the universe of extremes we live in today.”

The film, with Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve in the main roles, follows the story of a very faithful Romanian-Norwegian couple, the Gheorghiu family. They settle in a village located at the end of a fjord, where they quickly become friends with their neighbors, the Halberg family. The children of the two families are getting closer, despite their different educations. When the teachers discover bruises on the body of the oldest child of the Gheorghiu family, the community wonders if the traditional education they receive from their parents could be the cause.
