An agreement with Iran is getting closer. “We are discussing details”

“The Agreement has been substantially negotiated, subject to finalization, between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran and the other countries named,” Trump wrote on Truth Social after speaking by phone with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt about the initial framework for an agreement to end the war with Iran.

“The final aspects and details of the agreement are currently being discussed and will be announced soon. Among many other elements of the agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be opened,” Trump added. He noted that he had a separate conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and reported that it went “very well.” Netanyahu is considered an opponent of the agreement. As previously reported by Axios and other media, Trump's teleconference with the leaders of the region's countries was intended to discuss the project. It lasted over two hours.

Assumptions of the agreement

The media, citing people familiar with the talks at the highest level, reported that the parties to the conflict were close to reaching an agreement extending the ceasefire for between 30 and 60 days. Under this agreement, the Iranian authorities are to gradually open the Strait of Hormuz, but also commit to talks about diluting or transferring Iran's stockpiles of highly enriched uranium.

On the other hand, the US is also expected to release its blockade of the Strait, relax the sanctions regime and partially unblock frozen Iranian funds.

Commenting on the talks on Saturday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that Iran must get rid of its stocks of enriched uranium and cannot charge fees for transit through Hormuz.

In response to reports about the content of the agreement, a number of Republican Party politicians expressed concern and encouraged the president to resume attacks on Iran.

“If the region comes to believe that an agreement with Iran will allow the regime to survive and gain strength over time, we will add fuel to the fire in the conflicts in Lebanon and Iraq,” Lindsey Graham warned on the X platform.
