A 41-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital in serious condition with signs of obstructive jaundice and suspected tumor of the bile ducts. The disruption of the outflow of bile from the affected part of the liver led to its release into the blood, which caused a serious deterioration in health. After hospitalization, doctors conducted an examination and clarified the diagnosis – a form of oncology that affects the bile ducts in the area of their confluence.

Doctors note that this disease is extremely rare – from 1 to 3 cases per 100 thousand people per year. However, it is difficult to detect in the early stages, because the disease is often disguised as other pathologies of the liver, pancreas and biliary system and manifests itself as a complication, for example, jaundice.

After examining the patient and assessing the risks, doctors decided to carry out a radical operation, which is classified as very complex and can only be performed in expert-level medical institutions.

“To localize the tumor with millimeter precision, we involved highly qualified specialists in the examination. This operation is performed exclusively in an open manner, the liver is moved for surgical access and practically removed into the wound, the internal organs are mobilized and moved back. We removed the tumor, affected ducts and a significant amount of the liver, and performed a complex reconstruction of the bile ducts to maximize the preservation of the patient’s quality of life. In addition to the fact that these tumors are quite rare, they are also rarely found in a state and extent where we can perform radical surgery. This is the uniqueness of the case,” said Ruslan Khlobystin, a surgical oncologist at the Federal Scientific Research Center of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency of Russia.

After the operation, the patient's condition stabilized. Since her vital signs allowed her to continue treatment on an outpatient basis, she was discharged under the supervision of a surgeon at her place of residence.
