Nikola Veshny

Saint Nicholas, aka Nikolai Ugodnik, aka Nikolai the Wonderworker, is one of the most revered saints among the Russian people. He is considered the patron saint of sailors, merchants and children.

In honor of Nicholas the Ugodnik, two main holidays are celebrated each year – May 22 and December 19 (although there are other days of his memory). On this occasion in Rus' they said: “We have two Nikolas – one with grass, the other with winter.” From that day on, the grass really began to grow well, so the horses were already turned out at night. For this purpose, single guys from each family were equipped and escorted to the field. They gave us pies with buckwheat porridge. In the evening, girls joined them – and the fun began with songs and round dances.

Since Nikola, peasant life gradually went uphill. The weather was warm, there was enough fresh grass for domestic animals, cows and goats gave more milk – and therefore there was no need to worry about how to feed the family and livestock.

They also paid attention to weather signs. If the morning was humid and foggy, then you had to wash yourself with dew: this promised a person health and a rich harvest for the earth. Rain on Nikola was also considered a good omen.
