1 glass in infusion – and beets are sweeter than honey: the root vegetables are strong, juicy and without white rings – a life hack from an experienced summer resident

The taste of beets develops in June, experienced gardener Veronika Polivkina reminds summer residents. If you do nothing with the plants in the growth phase, then the root vegetables will not please you – they will grow with white rings, fibrous and tasteless. To harvest sweet and juicy beets at the end of the season, the expert suggests an effective ash fertilizer.

Infusion recipe

The basic fertilizer for beets in June is based on wood ash. It’s simple to make: stir a glass of ash in 10 liters of water and leave to steep for 5 hours. In the evening, water the beds with beets with plain water, and then with an ash solution.

The ash will enrich the root vegetables with potassium: it is this macroelement that is responsible for their taste. Potassium will also improve the structure of beets and reduce soil acidity. And the boron contained in this natural fertilizer will prevent the appearance of white rings and voids in the beets.

Important: do not fertilize beets with fresh manure. It is oversaturated with nitrogen, which deforms the root crops – they will become hard, small and covered with cracks.

How to water beets in June

The quality of the harvest also depends on watering the beets. It should be regular and moderate, without overflow or drought. And to protect the soil from drying out, be sure to mulch the beds. This can be done when the height of the seedlings is about 6-7 cm.

Don't forget to thin out your beet beds, otherwise the root crops will begin to compete for moisture and nutrients and, as a result, will grow small and crooked.
