Folk calendar

Ivan Dolgiy

On this day, the memory of John the Theologian, one of the twelve apostles, is celebrated. In Rus', on this day, peasants traditionally sowed wheat.

On this day, wealthy owners baked so-called votive pies and treated them to poor neighbors, as well as travelers and beggars. The old people especially for this purpose went out onto the road and prayed to God to send them a kind person with whom they could share a piece of bread. If some poor man or other wanderer passed along the road at that time, this was considered a good sign and foreshadowed a rich harvest in the future. Otherwise, if it was not possible to share the votive cake with anyone, it had to be fed to the birds. It was impossible to eat such baked goods yourself.
