1866 – Carol I began his first day as ruler of Romania

On May 11, 1866, Carol I officially began his first day as ruler of Romania, following his oath and proclamation of the previous day. The accession of the German prince Carol de Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen to the throne of Romania took place after the abdication of Alexandru Ioan Cuza and represented a decisive moment for the consolidation of the modern Romanian state.

The reign of Carol I, which lasted until 1914, was one of the most important in Romanian history. During his time, independence from the Ottoman Empire was achieved in 1877 and the proclamation of the Kingdom of Romania in 1881, with Carol becoming the country's first king.

1904 – Salvador Dalí was born

Salvador Dalí was born on May 11, 1904, one of the most famous artists of the 20th century and an emblematic figure of the surrealist current. The Spanish artist stood out for his eccentric style, dreamlike images and highly detailed techniques used in painting, sculpture and graphics.

Among his most famous works is “The Persistence of Memory”, the painting with deformed clocks, which became a symbol of Surrealism. Dalí collaborated throughout his life with famous filmmakers, writers and designers and remained a controversial figure until his death in 1989.

1960 – Adolf Eichmann was captured by the Mossad in Argentina

On May 11, 1960, Adolf Eichmann, one of the main organizers of the Nazi Holocaust, was secretly captured by agents of the Israeli Mossad service near Buenos Aires, Argentina. A former SS officer, Eichmann had fled Europe after World War II and was living under a false identity.

After his capture, Eichmann was smuggled to Israel, where he was tried for crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide. 1968 – Construction of the first Romanian Dacia car began

On May 11, 1968, the construction of the first Romanian Dacia car began, at the factory in Colibași, now Mioveni. The project was carried out in collaboration with the French manufacturer Renault and marked the beginning of the modern automobile industry in Romania.

The first model produced was the Dacia 1100, launched a few months later, based on the Renault 8. Subsequently, the Dacia 1300 became one of the most popular automobiles in communist and post-communist Romania, with its production continuing for decades.

1997 – Deep Blue beat Garry Kasparov

On May 11, 1997, the IBM-developed supercomputer Deep Blue defeated world champion Garry Kasparov in the final game of an official chess match played in classical format. It was the first time a computer had managed to defeat a reigning world champion in such a match.

Deep Blue's victory was considered a historic moment for the development of artificial intelligence and computer technology. The system could analyze millions of moves per second, and its success demonstrated the rapid advances computers are making in solving complex problems.
