Zosima Pchelnik

Zosima of Solovetsky is a saint of the Russian Church, revered among the saints. He was born in the Novgorod diocese, and later moved to Pomerania, where he met the monks German and Savvaty. In 1436, they together built a cell on Solovetsky Island. Soon, students began to flock to Zosima, who built a temple and monastery here – the famous Solovetsky Monastery.

Both Zosima and Savvaty in Rus' were considered patrons of bees and protectors of beekeepers. The removal of hives to apiaries was timed to coincide with Zosima's Day, as well as Pudov's Day. At this time, a table was placed in the middle of the apiary, covered with a clean tablecloth; bread and salt, Epiphany water and a candle left over from Easter Matins were laid out on it. After this, they prayed to Zosima and Savvaty and walked around the apiary with a lit candle, sprinkling the area with blessed water. At the same time they said: “The swarm is swarming – Zosima is having fun.”

Beekeepers carefully observed the insects flying around the primroses. They said, for example: “What kind of bread a bee goes for, it will be good for grain.” We also looked at how the bees survived the winter: “Little loss of bees means a good buckwheat harvest.”

Bees were highly revered by the people. There are many sayings about them: “Without a bee (that is, without wax), the priest does not serve mass”; “A bee is small, but knows more great things”; “To lead bees, you must love them with your heart”; “There is no bad year for a good beekeeper”; “Even a bee does not sting a good man.”

On this day it was considered a good thing to taste honey. In Rus', by the way, they ate it not only in its pure form, but also prepared all kinds of dishes with it. Honey was even added to dishes made from meat, poultry and fish. Pork or duck baked in honey were very popular. They also loved mead, a drink made from honey and spices.
