Folk calendar

Arina – “snatch the shores”

On this day, the three martyrs of Thessalonica are honored – the sisters Agapia, Chionia and Irina. According to legend, the pious sisters, along with other Christian women, hid in the mountains from the persecution of Emperor Diocletian, but in the end they were captured and brought to trial.

The women were asked to renounce their faith, but they refused. Agapia and Chionia were burned on the first day, and the rest were imprisoned to give them the opportunity to come to their senses. After the next interrogation, the ruler ordered Irina to be taken to a brothel, but no one there dared to touch the righteous woman. After this, the martyr was executed.

By Irina (Arinin) day, the rivers begin to enter their normal channels, leaving washed out banks and ravines. People said: “Arina – grab the banks!”, thereby reminding of the danger of the collapse of the banks washed away by the flood.

It was customary for Arina to plant seedlings. When planting young cabbage, the peasant women said: “Don’t be long-legged, be pot-bellied; don’t be empty, be tight; don’t be red, be tasty.” Similar spells existed for each vegetable. It was believed that after this day there should be several sunny days, due to which the seedlings quickly grow. The behavior of the seedlings was also used to judge future haymaking: if young plants actively drink water, it will take place on dry days.

Arina was also supposed to whiten the trunks of garden trees.
