Operation Jupiter in full swing: hundreds of searches in intellectual property files

On Monday, April 27, the police and prosecutors launched a large-scale action at the national level, within the “Jupiter” operation, to combat intellectual property crimes. As part of the intervention, 185 home searches are being implemented across the country, in 76 criminal cases targeting facts provided by the legislation on trademarks, geographical indications and copyright.

In the context of the International Day of Intellectual Property, marked annually on April 26, the Romanian authorities launched a broad action at the national level to combat crimes in this field. Under the coordination of the Prosecutor's Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice and the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police, police officers specialized in the investigation of economic crime carry out, on Monday, operative activities in dozens of criminal cases.
According to official data, 76 criminal files are targeted, in which no less than 185 home search warrants are implemented. Also, the investigators execute 25 arrest warrants and order measures to institute preventive seizures, as well as confiscation of goods.
The actions are carried out under the supervision of the case prosecutors and are aimed at administering the necessary evidence to prosecute the persons involved in illegal activities that infringe intellectual property rights. At the same time, the authorities aim to protect the business environment from non-competitive practices.
The investigations mainly concern crimes provided for by Law no. 84/1998 on trademarks and geographical indications and by Law no. 8/1996 on copyright and related rights, but also other criminal acts in the same sphere.
At the same time, at the level of 17 territorial police units, there are verification actions and detection of such crimes in flagrante delicto.
The Romanian Police points out that “the protection of intellectual property rights is a strategic objective, assumed at the institutional level, in accordance with the National Strategy in the field of intellectual property 2024-2028, approved by Government Decision no. 1.272/2023. The activities in this field are continuous and are included in the priorities of the law enforcement structures”.
Operation “Jupiter” has the role of coordinating and intensifying actions to combat serious and organized crime, including in the area of intellectual property, which is considered a priority area.
