The lower court ordered the seizure of approximately $500 million in 2025. property belonging to Kirchner and a number of other people convicted with her in a famous case known as the road traffic scandal. According to the judgment, they were to return the equivalent of USD 537 million to the state.
Kirchner's considerable fortune
According to “La Nacion”, Kirchner's defenders tried to exclude from the seizure of property the real estate that the former head of state had transferred to her children. The newspaper reported that these were properties, land and 10 apartments.
Kirchner was sentenced in 2022 to six years in prison and a lifelong ban from holding public office for siphoning the equivalent of millions of dollars from state coffers through road construction contracts in Patagonia in the south of the country. The irregularities occurred while she was president.
The verdict was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2025, and 72-year-old Kirchner began serving her prison sentence under house arrest – in her residence in Buenos Aires. The court agreed to this, taking into account the age of the convicted person.
Despite the verdict, Kirchner maintains great influence in the Peronist movement, which has dominated the country's politics for decades. In her apartment in Buenos Aires, she received political allies, gave speeches from the balcony and criticized the government of the current, right-wing president Javier Milei.
Kirchner ruled Argentina from 2007 to 2015. Previously, as the wife of the late President Nestor Kirchner, she was the first lady, and in the years 2019-2023 she served as the country's vice president.
