The initial truce, announced last week, was to expire on Sunday.

A third US aircraft carrier has arrived in the Middle East. USS George HW Bush joined USS Gerald R Ford and USS Abraham Lincoln in a consistent increase in naval firepower.

The US president also ordered that any Iranian vessel laying sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz be attacked.

Trump hopes to eventually broker a lasting peace between Lebanon and Israel, the two countries, which have been officially at war since 1948.

“I look forward to hosting the Prime Minister of Israel, Bibi Netanyahu, and the President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, in the near future,” Trump wrote.
