Minister of Digitization: The priority for this year is the combination of wallet, signature and digital identity: “Almost every citizen can use it”
The Minister of Digitalization, Irineu Darău, claims that an acceleration of digitalization will happen by itself, if Romania implements three aspects related to this field, namely the electronic identity card, the easily accessible digital signature and the digital wallet.
“I think that in 2026 and 2027 we have to make a major digital leap. I trust that, if the wallet is implemented well and quickly with all that it means, we will speed up digitization”, said the relevant minister, on Friday, in a press conference in Mureş county, according to News.ro.
“The priority would be, I would say, to unlock and implement a triplet that means a democratized digital signature, i.e. easily accessible, an electronic identity card used as widely as possible and that wallet, which is also a European obligation. Because this, practically, will mean that we will have a kind of digital wallet with documents, or official papers that can be implemented and signed, either through state applications or through private applications, and it is very important to allow private individuals to develop and that, I think, I'm also telling you based on the software experience, I think it will be the point or the lock that, if it opens, a kind of accelerated digitization will happen by itself”, explained Irineu Darău.
He believes that Romania has so far tried “a multi-annual and somewhat steep digitization”
“The priority for this year is, I told you, the combination of wallet, signature and digital identity. And if it's done well, if it's extensible, it should be used by almost every citizen, every institution and every private company. (…) I think that in 2026 and 2027 we have to make a digital leap, so to speak, major. We are in a way condemned to do it much later than we should have done it in the past and we would said, I trust that if the wallet is implemented well and quickly with all that it means, we will speed up digitalization”, emphasized Irineu Darău.
