Residents of Shantou City, China's Guangdong Province, witnessed a scene that was hard to ignore on the morning of Tuesday, April 14: HK$1,000 bills thrown by a woman from an apartment balcony. People rushed to collect the money scattered on the pavement.
The unusual incident took place in the Hexin Xinghu City residential complex in Longhu District and is being investigated by Shantou police, according to dimsumdaily.hk.
Footage widely shared on Xiaohongshu and Facebook shows a middle-aged woman repeatedly throwing wads of HK$1,000 and HK$500 bills, which were blown by the wind onto alleyways and sidewalks.
Witnesses say the amount may have exceeded HK$1 million, but authorities have yet to confirm the exact amount. There were speculations on social media that the gesture was caused by a quarrel between the woman and her husband.

Passers-by rushed to collect banknotes
A tenant reported that the bills “they were floating in the air and falling both inside the compound and on the side of the road”and people “they collected as much as they could”.
A shopkeeper in the area confessed to picking up some notes, initially thinking they were fake. “After checking them, I realized they are genuine“, he said, adding that the woman would have continued to throw money for about 20 minutes, until the police arrived.
The administration of the complex confirmed the incident, stating that some of the tenants handed over the found money.
However, the reason for the gesture is not known, nor is the total amount thrown away.
The police announced that they are investigating the case and appealed to the people who picked up the banknotes to hand them over to the police station or the administration of the complex.
